Ernst Haeckel recorded these forms in sketches and watercolours at a time when much of life beneath the water remained unfamiliar to the wider public. Many of his best-known illustrations were collected in Kunstformen der Natur, published between 1899 and 1904. Working with lithographer Adolf Giltsch, Haeckel transformed scientific observations into some of the most recognisable images in natural history.
Who was Ernst Haeckel?
Ernst Haeckel was a German zoologist, naturalist and illustrator whose work moved between biological research and visual representation. Born in Potsdam in 1834, he studied medicine before turning his attention to zoology. A research journey to Messina, Sicily, introduced him to radiolarians: microscopic, single-celled organisms with remarkably intricate mineral skeletons. Their complex structures became an important subject of both his scientific research and his art.
Haeckel spent much of his academic career at the University of Jena. He became one of Germany’s most prominent advocates of Charles Darwin, explaining and expanding upon evolutionary theory for a German-speaking audience. Not all of Haeckel’s theories have endured, but his influence on the language of biology remains substantial. He introduced or helped establish several scientific terms still used today, including phylogeny, ontogeny and ecology.
By the time of his death in 1919, Haeckel had described thousands of species and produced an extensive visual record of the natural world. His marine illustrations remain the most immediately recognisable part of that legacy.
Kunstformen der Natur — Art Forms in Nature
Haeckel’s best-known publication, Kunstformen der Natur, appeared in ten instalments between 1899 and 1904. Each instalment contained ten plates, bringing the completed work to 100 illustrations. Its subjects ranged from bats and orchids to spiders and hummingbirds, although marine organisms account for much of the collection.
The plates originated in Haeckel’s sketches and watercolours. Lithographer Adolf Giltsch translated these studies into finished prints, preserving their fine biological detail while giving each composition remarkable clarity. Jellyfish, radiolarians, corals and sea anemones are carefully classified, yet arranged with a strong sense of balance and symmetry.
This combination made Kunstformen der Natur more than a scientific reference work. Organisms that were microscopic, inaccessible or largely unknown outside specialist circles became visible to a broad audience. Viewed together, the plates present the underwater world as an ordered visual system: dense with repetition, variation and forms that often appear architectural.
The hidden geometry of marine life
Haeckel’s marine illustrations return repeatedly to the same underlying principle: complex forms organised around a centre. The bell of a jellyfish, the tentacles of a sea anemone and the structure of a coral colony all reveal patterns built through repetition. Even when the organisms are irregular, their growth follows a visual order.
Radiolarians gave Haeckel particularly rich material. These microscopic, single-celled organisms are surrounded by intricate mineral skeletons. Seen through a microscope, they resemble latticed spheres, spiked wheels and miniature architectural frameworks. Haeckel enlarged and arranged them on the page so that structures invisible to the naked eye could be studied in detail.
The same radial symmetry appears at a different scale in jellyfish and sea anemones. Tentacles extend from a central body, repeated elements circle an opening, and translucent layers overlap. Corals introduce branching and accumulation: one small form repeated until it becomes a larger structure.
Haeckel’s plates make these relationships easy to see. Organisms from different branches of marine life begin to share a visual language of circles, spirals, networks and radiating lines. Their geometry is never entirely rigid. It grows, shifts and adapts, retaining the irregularity of living forms.
Where science became art
Haeckel approached each organism as a zoologist, recording its anatomy and distinguishing features with close attention. Yet the finished plates were never neutral diagrams. Specimens were enlarged, centred and arranged to emphasise their structure. Repeated forms create rhythm across the page, while deliberate symmetry gives even the most unfamiliar organisms a sense of order.
This careful composition allowed scientific detail to take on a decorative character. The translucent bodies of jellyfish appear luminous against dark backgrounds. Radiolarians form intricate networks of circles and spines. Corals, anemones and microscopic organisms fill their plates with patterns that could belong to textiles, ceramics or architecture.
Published at the turn of the twentieth century, Kunstformen der Natur appeared as Art Nouveau was developing its own language of flowing lines and organic ornament. Haeckel’s images contributed to that visual culture and continued to circulate far beyond zoology. Their influence can still be recognised in illustration, graphic design and decorative art.
The plates feel modern because they show that pattern does not need to be imposed upon nature. It is already present in the structures of living things, ready to be observed, enlarged and reinterpreted.
From Haeckel’s illustrations to our marine print

Scale was particularly important. The marine forms needed enough room to retain their detail without overwhelming the garment. Viewed closely, the finer structures become visible; from a distance, they merge into a richly layered blue pattern.
The design draws on the visual language of Haeckel’s scientific illustrations rather than presenting any single plate as a complete image. It appears across three of our menswear styles: boxer shorts, a gown and lounge pants. Each garment gives the print a different rhythm, from the compact repeat of the boxer shorts to the broader, uninterrupted sections of the gown and lounge pants.
Why Haeckel’s underwater world still fascinates us
Haeckel’s marine illustrations occupy an unusual space between scientific record and visual invention. The organisms are real, observed through microscopes or gathered during zoological research, yet many appear too intricate or strangely constructed to belong to the natural world.
That tension gives the plates their lasting appeal. A radiolarian can resemble a piece of engineered architecture; a jellyfish might suggest glass, fabric or light suspended in water. Haeckel did not invent these structures, but his choices of scale, arrangement and colour changed how they could be seen.
More than a century after Kunstformen der Natur was published, its images still reward close attention. They remind us that some of nature’s most extraordinary designs exist beyond ordinary sight, in organisms easily overlooked or too small to see without magnification.
